Choosing the Right Safari Operator

Not all safari companies are equal. We outline the five questions every traveller should ask before booking — and what the answers reveal.

Ask how many vehicles the operator will share your sighting with. A truly private safari means one vehicle, one guide, and an itinerary built around your pace — not a shared schedule with other bookings layered into the same days.

Ask what happens if a flight is delayed or a camp is overbooked. The answer reveals how much on-the-ground infrastructure an operator actually has versus how much is subcontracted at the last minute.

Ask how guides are trained and how long they've worked with the company. Guiding quality varies enormously, and a guide's ability to read a track, position a vehicle for light, or anticipate a predator's next move is the single biggest factor in how a safari actually feels day to day.

And ask, directly, where the money goes — how much of a booking supports local staff, conservation fees, and community programs versus overseas margins. A specific, detailed answer is usually a good sign; a vague one usually isn't.

Five questions to ask before you book

  • Will we have a private vehicle and guide for the whole safari?
  • Who exactly will our guide be, and how long have they guided for you?
  • Are park fees, meals and water included, and what is not?
  • What happens if a flight is delayed or someone is unwell on safari?
  • Can you place us close to the migration for our dates, and how?

Signs of a good operator

  • Clear, itemised quotes with no hidden extras
  • A local team in Tanzania who answer quickly, including on WhatsApp
  • Honest advice on seasons, even when it means suggesting different dates
  • A valid Tanzanian tour operator (TALA) licence and recent independent reviews
  • Well-maintained 4x4 vehicles with pop-up roofs and charging points

Red flags

Prices far below everyone else’s usually mean shared vehicles, crowded campsites, shortened game drives or park fees left off the quote. A good operator will explain exactly what you are paying for.
